Greatwood Nursemaids:

Greatwood Nursemaids

These little chaps are invaluable to us, they look after the sick horses and because they are so small they do not pose a threat! they are also so cheeky that they will chivy a depressed horse out of the glooms!

Perhaps you would like to sponsor a Nursemaid?

Hamadeen

Hamadeen

This story is a typical illustration of how the way in which The Racing Industry comes to the rescue in cases of alleged neglect to racehorses.

Hamadeen, along with five others, were found 'in a terrible state' earlier this last year. (Racing Post, February 8, 2002)

Hamadeen at the time of discovery weighed just 366 kilos, his stable companion, Desert Warrior, was so malnourished that he collapsed and was subsequently humanely destroyed. The trainer, Dr Jon Scargill and his wife Sue Scargill alerted the RSPCA as to their concern over the care and welfare of the horses. 'Emergency Relief for Thoroughbreds' the charity set up by The Racehorse Owners Association to provide for horses in need of urgent attention, stepped in to meet the cost of veterinary treatment and care. Having put the horses on the road to recovery, they contacted Greatwood and asked if we could take him in to recover from his ordeal and to ultimately re-school and rehome. When Hamadeen arrived with us in April, he was pathetically thin and dispirited but obviously had every intention of pulling through, and totally won everyone over by his bravery through adversity. Four minutes after his arrival, he was found not to be the gelding we had expected but a 6 year old stallion. Hamadeen

After intensive nursing and lots of attention, including sensitive dental work, Hamadeen was gelded. He became fast friends with our resident nursemaid Tish (a miniature Shetland pony)

Hamadeen is a delight and will make a great horse for someone. He will never totally recover from his ordeal, he is a great worrier and shakes from head to toe if he is unsure, but he is kind and trusting, he was worth saving and at only 7 years old the world is his oyster.
